Ohio Municipal Income Tax Amnesty

By Ronald K. Bodtcher, State Tax Central

"The City of Springfield [Ohio] Tax Amnesty Settlement Program gives taxpayers an opportunity to resolve income tax debts, file missing returns, and disclose unreported tax liabilities with the elimination of all penalties, one-half of the interest charges and without fear of criminal charges. Springfield’s Tax Amnesty Program begins February 15, 2004 and ends May 17, 2004."

COMMENT:

For more information on the Springfield amnesty program, go to http://www.ci.springfield.oh.us/AmnestyFAQ.pdf and read all about it.

Note that Springfield is not the only Ohio municipality currently offering amnesty. New Carlisle is hoping that an amnesty program running through April 30 will provide about $300,000 to help compensate for overspending of $500,000 due to a bookkeeping error. "For the city to operate, we need that money," Nick Hamilton, city finance director said. After amnesty expires, the city will file charges against delinquent taxpayers. There are 567 cities and villages in Ohio with a municipal income tax. I would gladly check each one for possible amnesty programs, but, unfortunately, I don't have the time to spare right now. To find out if your city or village is offering amnesty, go to http://www.statetaxcentral.com/Ohio/Taxes_by_City/ and click on "Municipal Income Tax (OH)".
